MAZE BY TORCHLIGHT

MAZE BY TORCHLIGHT

A magical way to experience the beauty of the maze at dusk.

30 AUGUST 2024

We'll be collaborating with the team from the Halesworth branch of Cancer Research UK to bring you an evening of fun for the whole family whilst raising money for a fantastic cause. Navigate your way around the maze as the sun sets over the beautiful Blyth - a fun challenge by torchlight.

Doors open at 6.30pm so the kids can have a race around the playpark and enjoy the traditional fete-style games that the ladies from Halesworth CRUK will be laying on, including classic old Welly Wanging .

There will be a tombola and cake stall in the playpark and our cafe will be open for hot dogs, sausage rolls, fries, cakes, hot drinks, soft drinks and tipples.

The maze will open at 7:45pm - time to grab your torches & a map and start hunting for the stamp points.
Please bring your own torches and dress for any weather.

We regret that no dogs (other than assistance dogs) are allowed within the maze or playpark.

100% of proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Halesworth branch of Cancer Research UK.

FAQS

HOW MUCH IS THE HALLOWEEN EVENT?

Please see details above. There are discounts for booking online and other promotion vouchers are available.

ARE DOGS ALLOWED?

Sadly, dogs (other than guide dogs) are not allowed in the maze or in the picnic & play area. There are walks suitable for dogs from Old Hall Café where you are welcome to exercise dogs. We also can provide water for thirsty dogs.

ARE PATHS ACCESSIBLE TO
PUSH CHAIRS?

Yes. Anyone bringing small children are advised to use push chairs around the maze as toddlers often get tired legs! Some paths might be bumpy due to tractor wheeling’s and there are one or two slopes. It is natural and therefore uneven in places. TIP: as the season progresses, the paths get compacted and therefore harder. The later in the season - the better for buggies!

ARE PATHS ACCESSIBLE TO
WHEEL CHAIRS?

Possibly is the honest answer. Each individual wheel chair user will have different considerations relating to the type of chair they use, the individual user and the person that accompanies them. See 'push chair' users question above - ground conditions will vary depending on the weather so assessment on the day by the individual user is advisable. Toilet facilities are accessible to wheel chairs.

FAQS

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GO ROUND THE MAZE?

For those keen to complete the main maze & find all the stamp points, it will take around an hour, on average. Obviously this varies depending on your map reading skills! If you don't include the stamp points and want to get round the maze via the quickest route, it will only take about half an hour. The mini maze will take approximately 20 minutes/half an hour to complete.

IS A MAP PROVIDED?

Yes. On arrival everyone receives a map and a stamp card at  to use within the maze. Each map has a phone number to call if you get lost. There are 8 stamp points to find, collect all 8 and receive a lollipop prize! There are also ‘cheat maps’ which you can ask for at admissions. These have all 8 stamp points marked on them in case you might need to placate children with tired legs!

ARE YOU OPEN IF IT RAINS?

Yes. The maze closes, on average, one day every season due to prolonged torrential rain. If the weather is wet, please check the website or call us in advance. We have very light, sandy soil which allows rain water to drain away quickly. The paths within the maze occasionally have the odd puddle but generally are never really muddy. Everything else stays open except the jumping pillow which gets too slippery when wet. It dries quickly so is never closed for long.

IS IT THE SAME AS SWEETCORN?

No! It looks very similar to sweetcorn and is from the same family but is much harder than sweetcorn and definitely not as sweet tasting! It is grown specifically for animal food. Humans can eat it but sweetcorn is definitely much nicer and more digestible! The  advice is - leave it for the cows to eat!

FAQS

CAN WE BRING A PICNIC?

Yes. You are very welcome to bring a picnic and we have numerous picnic benches to choose from. There is a cafe serving hot or cold drinks, light refreshments, ice creams etc. and you are welcome to shelter inside in inclement weather.

HOW DO YOU MAKE THE MAZE?

The maze crop is planted every year in April. The whole field gets drilled with seed in a grid pattern to make a good thick crop. When the plant is still short, perhaps only an inch or two tall, the design is plotted onto the field using GPS. The maze is designed by hand and then input into a computer which maps each part of the design and allocates numbers to the paths – it resembles a giant dot-to-dot! The land surveyors plot out each path of the design onto the field using GPS to pin point their exact position - each point is then marked with a numbered cane. The field is full of canes indicating the line of each path. A small tractor with a 1.5m rotavator on the back is then guided along the route of canes, rotavating out the plants as it goes. This is quite tricky with all the dead ends, twists and turns! Once the paths are cut, it is then up to the sun and rain to ensure the crop grows.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MAZE AT THE END OF THE SEASON?

The maize crop is harvested when it is ripe, after the Halloween event. It is chopped up during the harvest process, the stalk, the leaves and the cobs are all used. This is then stored carefully and fed to the dairy cows during the long winter months when they cannot get out to grass. For us it has a double use and is the perfect recyclable crop. We grow it on several other fields on the farm as animal food.
